‘Lemonade’ by Rhiannon Paige review

Rhiannon Paige is a British Country Pop/Rock singer songwriter from Bristol. Her soul radiates through her music, creating songs that are relatable and witty in style, very reminiscent of Lucy Spraggan personally. However her website details that if Pink and Kacey Musgraves had a love child then Rhiannon would be it.

Rhiannon explains that:

“The song is kind of a metaphor for all the negative things in your life and your sign to just get rid of it/ them. Just because someone has been in your life for a long time it doesn't mean they will treat you better than a new person that comes in.”

In a way, you could say these ‘negative things’ are like the bubbles and fizz of lemonade. Some may fizzle out quite quickly whilst others linger before resolving themselves.

It’s based off of the proverb, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade” essentially, when you have a bad time, make the most of it, for it too shall pass.

The song has a strong start when your hear the ring-pull go ready to quench your musical thirst. This is the perfect song to play when things aren’t going right and it’ll soon change your disposition, and have you singing, tapping or even dancing along.

“Got another dream that's come to mind

I'll add it to the list in which you'll find

All my hopes and dreams I seem to be indecisive.

Not gunna pretend like I know where I'm heading

Still won't have a clue when I make it into heaven

But hey ho, just let life flow

Just let life flow.”

We all have dreams and ambitions, some more serious than others. This is evident with the first lyric, by adding to the list of indecisive hopes and dreams. In a way metaphorically speaking, these ambitions are the bubbles. Each formed at a particular moment and you watch its progression up the glass much like moving forward in life through time, only for it to reach its natural end.

Being indecisive is often seen as a negative, non-committal; however it also shows that you’re wanting to be fully informed and educated before fully committing, which personally is a testament to their character. Equally change is also daunting, and can result in being indecisive for one fear or another, be that of the unknown, of getting hurt, or something else equally as valid.

The second part of the first verse is referencing all the times we try and kid ourselves, knowing what we want to do, when in fact, because of all of the choices we have, we’re still no closer to knowing when we leave this world. The verse finishes on a great mantra and motto. “Just let life flow.”

“And if life gave me a lemon

I'd probably just throw it away Cause why do I want a lemon

When I don't like lemonade.”

The chorus is reflecting how we perceive and value things. Whilst one person may see a lemon, or an opportunity and throw it away, another will see its value, worth and potential and make something of it. Whilst we may not like it, others may well love it.

“How can they be friends when they're coming and their going

All I really hear is the constant sound of droning

I nod my head,

To pretend like I'm listening

And if I walked into the street And I bumped into a stranger

In that short time they would probably know me better

Than you ever have, in the time that l've known you Sch Ba Do Ba Day.”

The second verse really questions so called “friends” intentions when they’re back and forth out of our lives. They’re more than happy to alleviate their problems onto us, but the moment we need to offload our burdens, very few people are ever around for you. It also jibes how that of a stranger could know us better than an alleged ally.

The song then returns to the chorus, before entering the bridge.

“The thing I find in life

Nothing ever goes as planned

Just like I was for my Mum and dad.”

The bridge details that as much as we may want to plan our lives, we can’t. There may be a degree to which we can control it but it’s not guaranteed, even family planning.

The song then breaks into an instrumental returning to the chrous twice over. This is then followed by verse three, which is identical to the first. The song closes with the chorus once more, leaving us with the knowledge that life is all about perceptions and how we and information is received.

The song was released 16 August 2024, and is available to download, purchase and stream from all of your usual music services. If you love the track, then check out Rhiannon’s social media and her website for upcoming gigs, further releases and tours.
